The month of November in Cambodia represents the dry season meaning there will be almost no rain for six months, although the odd, short shower is not unheard of. For southern Vietnam, November welcomes back the summer in all its glory with some of the best weather of the year, thanks to clear skies and a drop in humidity.

November and December are warm times in Cambodia and southern Vietnam: In Vietnam, daily high temperatures average 85°F, rarely falling below 79°F or exceeding 90°F. In Cambodia, daily high temperatures average 86°F, rarely falling below 80°F or exceeding 90°F.

The ship has under-bed storage; if sharing a cabin, we recommend 1 bag per person.

According to the terms of Avalon Waterways, porterage for one suitcase on your cruise/tour is included. This single bag should have dimensions not exceeding 30 x 21 x 11 in. (76 x 53 x 28 cm.), and weight not exceeding 50 lbs. (22 kg.) or less if your air carrier has stricter weight/dimension limitations (you may be required to remove articles and put them in another bag if weight or size limits are exceeded). It is recommended that you consult your air carrier as size and weight limitations vary from airline to airline and even according to destination, and are becoming more restrictive.

*There may be a baggage limit for our flight within Cambodia (on embarkation day). The helpful staff at Singles Travel International will inform you in plenty of time to make packing allowances.

In these countries, where the weather is hot, it’s important to dress both for the heat but to also be mindful of the cultural differences:

In general, we recommended casual and comfortable, lightweight and breathable summer clothing, and comfortable walking shoes are a must. Note that dress code aboard a river cruise is very casual, and some days you may have dinner in the same outfit you wore during day when the schedule is full.

Cultural considerations:

In both Cambodia & Vietnam, Buddhism is widely practiced, so there are some dressing rules you should obey:

  • Avoid skimpy clothing in general – these countries are much more conservative than the West. Women, don’t show too much cleavage or wear short skirts or shorts.
  • For both men and women, when visiting any religious site, temple, or pagoda, you should wear long-sleeved tops and full-length skirts or trousers. Otherwise, it is considered disrespectful to the Buddha.
  • Make sure your shoulders are covered in religious sites.
  • Avoid any clothing with religious themes, images of the Buddha, etc.
  • Do not wear any clothing or accessories that insult Vietnam or its government.
  • When visiting a prayer building, be prepared to  remove your footwear.

Packing Tips: Take only what you need; don’t over pack. A river cruise is casual. Save room for souvenirs and purchases. Pack flat and full to avoid wrinkling. Bring wardrobe basics; mix and match around two or three colors. Don’t pack anything valuable, fragile or perishable. Label your luggage with an outside tag, and place an identification card inside each suitcase.

Essential Items for a River Cruise: We highly recommend that you bring the following items.

– A smile and an open-minded attitude
– Binoculars for best sightseeing while cruising
– Winter/Weatherproof Jacket (wind-and rainproof outer shell)
– A good, comfortable pair of broken-in walking shoes
– A pair of shoes for restaurants, evenings on the town (ship is casual)
– Collapsible umbrella and/or lightweight raingear.
– Sunglasses
– Toiletries: all your daily essentials.
– Prescription medications: sufficient supply for the entire trip plus legible written prescription in case of loss. Keep medications in their original, labeled container. Always pack your medications in your carry-on bag!
– Eyeglasses, contacts, contact lens solution. You may want to bring along a written prescription for your eyewear in case of loss.
– Over the counter medications: cold remedy, aspirin/pain reliever, antacid/stomach upset remedy, Band-Aids, money or other anti-bacterial medication.
– Travel alarm clock with illuminated face, especially for guests in an inside cabin.
– Travel journal/notepad and reading material.
– Small, basic sewing kit with a few extra buttons. Remember to pack scissors in your checked bag!
– Photography Equipment

Avalon Waterways requires that all guests must provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination before embarkation.

No other inoculations are required for travel to Asia; however, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends updating all routine booster shots for travel almost anywhere. Please schedule a physical check-up, before your trip, to discuss the type of trip in which you are participating with your physician.

You and your physician may access much more, very detailed health information for travelers (including tips on staying healthy while traveling) on the CDC website. Click their “Traveler’s Health” link or call toll-free 24-hours at 1-800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).

The currency used throughout the cruise is the US Dollar (onboard) and generally accepted in Cambodia. Be sure to verify the rate of exchange prior to departure, and make sure all of your bills are relatively new. Old or wrinkled bills will not be accepted. In Vietnam, it is better use the local currency, the Vietnamese Dong.

Make sure that the Vietnamese notes you receive are not torn; this is because many shops and restaurants will not accept them.

Exchange rates fluctuate often. You may find the current exchange rates online by typing “foreign exchange rates” in your search engine. One reliable website is: www.xe.com.

Currency Exchange: Most hotels and restaurants in big cities will accept major credit cards, but for incidentals and small vendors you will need some local currency. ATM machines will dispense local currency for internationally accepted ATM cards and/or credit cards. They are usually conveniently located in large cities, but are limited in smaller towns and rural areas. You may exchange cash for local currencies at hotels, banks and exchange bureaus.

Credit Cards: Your credit card will be accepted to settle your incidentals bill at all hotels and in major shops, restaurants and aboard the Saigon. American Express is not accepted.

What Our Members Are Saying

Just returned home after a WONDERFUL Rockin', Romantic Rhine Cruise with STI. It was a very different experience from a large cruise ship, as it had about 140 passengers. I got to meet many people from STI and others from outside the group. Terrific experience! Each day, we had excursions, included in the tour. We really got to see the cities where we stopped. The local color was amazing. It was quite an experience to see castles, windows, Gutenberg Bibles up close and personal. Plenty of time to shop or just walk around.  The food was wonderful. With breakfast, we could have sparkling wine or mimosas. With dinner, the wine and beer were flowing freely. My favorite two optional excursions were a German Dinner (not to miss) and a trip to a functioning windmill, where we went right inside to see how it works. While cruising, we experienced going thru canal locks. In the mid portion of the Rhine, we saw castle after castle and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards. I highly recommend this trip. Heaven for photography. It is an experience of a lifetime!

The Rockin Rhine River Cruise was one of the best vacations I have ever had. Our group kept things lively and there was always someone that was around to do things like shopping or tours....or just to sit around in a Biergarten and relax with a glass of local wine or beer.
