Sunday, May 7, 2023 (D)

Istanbul – Welcome to Istanbul, the gateway between East and West, Europe and Asia, between Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Turkish. At 3pm we’ll meet our guide for an orientation at our hotel, and then we’ll set out on foot to explore the city. Starting from the famous Sultanhamet square, we’ll begin to perceive how this marvelous city has been shaped by overlapping civilizations. In one direction we’ll face the square of the ancient Roman hippodrome with its towering obelisk, in another the Hagia Sophia, originally the church of Holy Wisdom designed by Greek mathematicians in the sixth century A.D., in another direction the shimmering waters of the Bosporus, and in another the Blue Mosque whose hand painted tiles and powerful arches open to quiet contemplation for its colleges of math and jurisprudence. After finishing our orientation walk, we’ll conclude our first day with a welcome meal and getting to know our new travel companions.

Monday, May 8, 2023 (B,L)

Istanbul – This morning we’ll begin our local guided tour with a visit to the former church Hagia Sophia. For nearly a thousand years it was the largest church in Christendom with its astonishing dome and gorgeous mosaics. It was the seat of the Eastern Patriarch until the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans when it was converted into a mosque. After our visit to this architectural marvel, we’ll hop on a tram and head over to the spice market for an introduction to Turkish spices, teas, halva, and perhaps the world’s tastiest Turkish delight. For lunch our guide will introduce us to an assortment of street-food treats before bringing us to one of Istanbul’s greatest architectural marvels, the Suleymaniye Mosque. Designed in the middle of the sixteenth century by the architect Sinan, it is a mathematical wonder of beautiful proportions like the greatest buildings of the renaissance.

This afternoon you’ll be on a boat across the Bosphorus to enjoy seeing the beautiful mansions along the water or see the Maiden Tower and Dolmabahçe Palace from our private boat.

Tuesday, May 9, 2023 (B,L)

Istanbul – This morning our local guide will lead us through the luxurious fifteenth century Topkapi Palace. The former residence of the Ottoman sultans, the story-book beauty of the gardens, gate-towers, kitchens, armory, and royal rooms feels almost enchanted. This place is a window for the imagination, the intrigue of palace romances, political aspirations, and the royal setting of the Ottoman court. We’ll also visit Hagia Irene, the church of Holy Peace. It is one of the oldest churches in city, originally constructed during the reign of Constantine. It was here that the Second Ecumenical Council of Christianity, council of Constantinople took place.

After our visit to the Topkapi Palace and museums we’ll stroll over to the Grand Bazar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. With over sixty streets and 4,000 shops, a visit to the Grand Bazar is a multi-sensory experience like stepping into a covered city out of a storybook, filled with craftsmen, jewelers, ceramics, and the vaulted ceilings where the expertise of thousands of years of artisan culture is gathered into one place. After our visit to the Grand Bazar we’ll be free for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday, May 10, 2023 (B,L,D)

Istanbul /Cappadocia – After breakfast this morning we’ll head to the airport to fly to Cappadocia. Famous today as a site of natural wonders and hot-air balloons floating over fairy-chimneys at dawn, the underground forth century A.D. cities of churches, homes, stables, and warehouses are equally marvelous. After lunch and checking into our hotel we’ll have a quick orientation to Sinassos village, one of the oldest settlements of Cappadocia. The architecture here is unique for its stone brick houses with spacious courtyards and castle-like feel.

This afternoon, we’ll make a trip to Uçhisar natural Promontory Castle and stroll around the Pigeon Valley.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy a Turkish family style meal with terracotta pots of eggplant, sauteed beef, and the traditional comfort food whose recipes grandmothers have passed down from generation to generation.

Thursday, May 11, 2023 (B,L)

Cappadocia We’ll set out very early this morning for an INCLUDED sunrise hot-air ballooning experience. The soft morning light rising over the honey-combed landscape is an enchanting perspective of the valley, shaped over the course of millions of years.

At the end of our magical morning ride, we’ll enjoy the morning’s second breakfast before heading off with our local guide to explore on foot some of the terrain seen from above.

Together we’ll stroll through the Pasabag Valley, one of the most beautiful places in Cappadocia, before visiting the Goreme Open Air Museum. These forth century cave dwellings were once home to a thriving monastic community who embraced a vision of simplicity and sanctity in a life dedicated to prayer in the wilderness. Following our visit to the ancient cities our guide will bring us to a ceramic workshop in Avanos. Located along the Kizilirmak, ‘the red river’, and the source of the red clay, the pottery factories in this area date back to the bronze age and the time of the Hittites. We’ll witness this 3,000-year-old tradition in artisan demonstrations and explanations and a quick visit to the museum.

This evening we can organize a singles-only casual wine-tasting and an optional meal of Turkish barbeque.

Friday, May 12, 2023 (B,D)

Cappadocia/Konya  This morning our local guide will lead us through a tour of the underground cities of Kaymakli. Originally carved deep into the stone for protection from enemies and heavy winters as early as the seventh century B.C., at one time there were 3,600 of these subterranean cities with populations ranging into the thousands.

After Underground city experience, en route to Konya, we will visit the famous Sultanhan Caravanserai, where the merchants of Silk Road used this magnificent building (built in 1229 AD) as a stopover along their journey. The massive portal carved with Seljukian style represents the art of 13th century. In Konya, we’ll visit the Museum of  Mevlana, the mausoleum-turned-museum of the famous mystic poet and founder of the Sufi Order of the Whirling Dervishes, Rumi. Your guide will read the great poems of Rumi and explain all the costumes and customs of Whirling Dervish tradition. Having pomegranate tea on Alaatin landscaping park walk will be bonus for Konya visit.

Saturday, May 13, 2023 (B,D)

Konya/Pamukkale – Today we will have a long drive to Aegean region.

After lunch we’ll continue towards Pamukkale, a site that has been drawing visitors to its thermal waters since antiquity. The name, which means ‘cotton castle’, derives from the cascading plateaus of white limestone shaped over the course of millennia as the calcite-rich springs continuously overflow into pools below. Here we’ll visit the Pool of Cleopatra, the famed queen of Egypt and we’ll join the tradition of classical Greeks and Romans with a calming soak in these waters renowned for their healing properties. After a barefoot walk over the travertine stone and a relaxed soak, we’ll follow our guide to the amazing Roman theatre from the 2nd century AD.

Our hotel is built at the top of these hot springs with its own thermal pool free for our use.

Sunday, May 14, 2023 (B,L)

Pamukkale/Bodrum After breakfast this morning we’ll drive inland towards the ancient Greek city of Aphrodisias. Named for Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodisias was one of the most beautiful and intriguing cities in antiquity. It was tax exempt when it became the holy city of the roman emperors and was famous for its beautiful sculptures and school of philosophy. Today it houses perhaps the best-preserved ancient stadium anywhere in the Mediterranean. Its auditorium, the odeon, and the tetrapylon, the monumental gateway to the sanctuary of Aphrodite, all inspire an idea of the former magnificence of the city.

After lunch today we’ll load our bus and drive west back to the Aegean coast to Bodrum. After checking into our hotel this evening, we’ll be free for dinner, either at our hotel’s excellent restaurant and beautiful view of St. Peter’s Castle or in town by the sea.

Monday, May 15, 2023 (B,L)

Bodrum – This morning we’ll visit Bodrum’s St. Peter’s Castle. Built by crusaders at the beginning of the 14th century this castle served as a fortification for 500 years before becoming home to Bodrum’s underwater archeological museum. It now houses the treasures of thousands of amphora recovered from the sea floor and shipwrecks of boats from the 12th century B.C., and 6th century A.D.

After visit of castle, we’ll board our ‘gullet’ a traditional two-masted Turkish sailing boat to explore the beautiful Black Island, some hidden coves. Enjoy our lunch and serenity of nature.

Tuesday, May 16, 2023 (B,L)

Bodrum – After breakfast we’ll drive to Etrim for an immersive experience in the traditional culture of a small Turkish village. Etrim is not in your average traveler’s guidebook and may give us the most authentic local experience of the trip. We’ll start our day in the village coffee house where we’ll meet our host, who will introduce us to the local traditions of wool production and carpet weaving, of wine making, farming and beekeeping. Next our host will bring us into a couple of local houses, where we’ll see firsthand the artisan practice of processing and dying wool, boiling caldrons of pigments, and the looms where the millennial old art of weaving is practiced. This visit is both a step back in time to an older way of life and a stepping closer to humanity and the natural gifts of the world.

Next our host’s mother will bring us into her small kitchen and teach us how to make a dolma, often a communal event in rural Turkish communities. After lunch, coffee, wine, and conversation shared with locals we’ll take a tour of locally made carpets and have an opportunity to learn more about the cooperatives of women that produce them.

In the late afternoon we’ll return to Bodrum for another free late afternoon.

Wednesday, May 17, 2023 (B,L)

Bodrum/Kusadasi – After breakfast this morning we’ll drive toward the ancient Greek Temple of Apollo at Didyma. Monumental pillars, which are more than 70 feet tall are the proof of amazing ancient Greek architecture. This temple was a renowned prophecy center, as it was the rival of the famous Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece. Later on we will drive to Kusadasi, where we may experience local spa with sensational massage options.

Thursday, May 18, 2023 (B,L)

Kusadasi/Ephesus – After breakfast this morning we’ll drive to the nearby ancient city of Ephesus. Similar in many ways to the Greek sister-city of Athens, Ephesus tells the story of beauty, prosperity, self-governance, and then tragedy and tyranny. As our guide recounts the stories of love, possibility, and betrayal, we’ll walk the ancient streets and visit Theater that once housed 25,000 spectators. As we explore ancient Roman terrace houses and the remnants of temples, shops, bath houses, we’ll glimpse the sophistication and simplicity of the port-city that endured more than a thousand years. Later we will visit the House of Mother Mary, where millions of Catholics believe that our lady spent her last days with peace.

Later we will visit local leather factory where they make leather jackets, bags for well-known brands like Armani, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, etc. Also, anyone interested may visit the store of a local Jewish jewelry designer in Kusadasi, whose family has been running this store since 1923.

Tonight, we’ll return to port of Kusadasi to visit our guide’s favorite seafood restaurant for an optional meal together of locally caught seabream seabass, calamari, and the catch of the day.

Friday, May 19, 2023 (B)

Kusadasi/Izmir/Istanbul – After breakfast, transfer to Izmir Airport for your flight to Istanbul, end of the tour. Flight included.

Turkey is an enormous country, having land in both Asia and Europe. The country’s size means there’s lots of different weather, although most places have warm weather in May, as summer gets closer.  You’ll find some of the best touring weather on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast at this time, likely in the low-to-mid-70s.

In Cappadocia and even Istanbul, weather will be considerably cooler – likely in the high 50s to low 60s during the daytime. In Cappadocia, be prepared for some rain.

Currently, most international airlines will allow you to check one bag, weighing 50 pounds each, for free. In addition you may carry-on one bag plus a personal item such as a purse or briefcase. Please check with your air carrier for up-to-the minute regulations and fees for checked baggage.

In Turkey, the dress code is much the same at it is in the United States. Although it is a Muslim country, it is secular, and everyone is allowed to wear what s/he chooses. You will see most women, especially in Istanbul and in the resort areas, do not cover their hair and wear modern clothing.

There will be times when we will go into mosques and churches. In this case, both men and women will need to ensure that their shoulders and knees are covered. Also, women must cover their hair before entering a mosque. It will be helpful to bring a lightweight scarf with you to use to cover yourself, but most mosques do offer them prior to entry.

Meet Your STI Concierge

Vicki

Hi! My name is Vicki, and I am so happy to have joined the STI family as a Concierge! After having a career as a health-and-fitness writer and then having children, I decided to make a career change in order to pursue my love for travel. For 9 years now, I have designed small-group tours all over Europe and have led tours in Italy, Malta and Croatia. From the moment I began leading tours, being able to share wonderful experiences and make people smile through discovering a new location - or perhaps through discovering something about themselves - I felt as if I had found exactly what I was meant to do! I look forward to making your vacation dreams come true.

What Our Members Are Saying

Just returned home after a WONDERFUL Rockin', Romantic Rhine Cruise with STI. It was a very different experience from a large cruise ship, as it had about 140 passengers. I got to meet many people from STI and others from outside the group. Terrific experience! Each day, we had excursions, included in the tour. We really got to see the cities where we stopped. The local color was amazing. It was quite an experience to see castles, windows, Gutenberg Bibles up close and personal. Plenty of time to shop or just walk around.  The food was wonderful. With breakfast, we could have sparkling wine or mimosas. With dinner, the wine and beer were flowing freely. My favorite two optional excursions were a German Dinner (not to miss) and a trip to a functioning windmill, where we went right inside to see how it works. While cruising, we experienced going thru canal locks. In the mid portion of the Rhine, we saw castle after castle and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards. I highly recommend this trip. Heaven for photography. It is an experience of a lifetime!

The Rockin Rhine River Cruise was one of the best vacations I have ever had. Our group kept things lively and there was always someone that was around to do things like shopping or tours....or just to sit around in a Biergarten and relax with a glass of local wine or beer.
