Friday, Nov. 18, 2022

Arrive in Cape Town today. You will be met at the aircraft by our VIP team, who will assist you through immigration and customs, delivering you to your driver in the arrivals hall. Transfer to the hotel, just a 25-minute drive and located in the heart of the Cape Town Waterfront.

Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022

Full day tour, including Table Mountain, District 6, Bo Kaap and Kirstenbosch. We begin with a trip up the Table Mountain, where 1000m above the city below, we are rewarded with spectacular 360 views. Then on to the Bo Kaap Museum: Initially a house that depicted the lifestyle of a nineteenth-century Muslim family, the building has become a social history museum telling the story of the local community as they went through colonialism and apartheid.

We continue on to District Six, originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, laborers and immigrants. It was a vibrant center with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the 2oth century, however, the process of removals and marginalization had begun. The first to be forced out were black South Africans who were displaced from the District in 1901. As the more prosperous moved away to the suburbs, the area became a neglected ward of the city. Our last stop will be the wealthy coastal suburb of Camps Bay. Set on the slopes of Table Mountain, it overlooks a series of beautiful sandy bays and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Camps Bay is home to Cape Town’s most glamorous beach. Return to our hotel for an included dinner.

Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022

Today we enjoy a full-day guided tour of the Cape Peninsula, with its magnificent wildlife! We’ll first visit Hout Bay and its informal settlement of Imizamo Yethu. About 60 km outside of Cape Town, Cape Point is home to breathtaking bays, beaches and rolling green hills and valleys. It falls within the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site, and this region is one of the richest areas for plants in the world. If seeing penguins is a bucket-list item for you, then you’re in for a treat: We will go to Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, home to whales, penguins and seals! Lunch is included today. Dinner at leisure.

Monday, Nov. 21, 2022

After breakfast, we’ll head to Robben Island for a morning tour of the famed prison island located 6 miles off Cape Town. This notorious prison is where Africa’s political prisoners were kept during the colonial and Apartheid years of South Africa. Return to the Waterfront, where we’ll have a free afternoon to shop, have lunch, browse, etc.! Dinner this evening is included.

Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022

Hotel check out and departure for our next destination: the wine region of Stellenbosch! Depart at mid-morning for Somerset West and the Cheetah Outreach facility, an education and community-based an education and community-based program designed to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah; we’ll enjoy a guided tour with these amazing cats and see other elusive African cats at the rehabilitation centre. Here we are able view and interact with these amazing creatures (there is an additional charge to have personal interactions and photos with the cheetahs). There will be a vineyard stop for lunch before we head into Stellenbosch for hotel check-in and a few free hours exploring this University town. Dinner at leisure this evening.

Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022

Eat a hearty breakfast, because today we enjoy a full day of activities in the Cape Winelands exploring the vineyards, cellars and other cultural experiences. Our first experience will be the Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour, one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley: picturesque vineyards, breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines, and a 300-year history. We’ll enjoy stops at three wineries. Lunch is included today. Dinner at leisure.

Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022 (B,L,D)

Hotel checkout and morning for a flight to Skukuza. On arrival at Skukuza, Jock rangers will meet us and drive us for 45 minutes south through the reserve to the Jock Safari Lodge, located in Kruger National Park. Upon arrival at the Lodge, a light lunch and orientation will take place before we freshen up for the afternoon safari activities. Over the next 3 days, we’ll have a total of 6 safari drives!!

Kruger National Park, in northeastern South Africa, is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. Its high density of wild animals includes the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. Hundreds of other mammals make their home here, as do diverse bird species such as vultures, eagles and storks. Mountains, bush plains and tropical forests are all part of the landscape. We’ll see it all during our 3 days here on safari.

Enjoy Thanksgiving on Safari this year! Enjoy a festive holiday dinner tonight “Boma Style.”

November marks the beginning of summer in South Africa, so expect warm and sunny temps with perfect beach weather lasting throughout the month. Temperatures are around 74°, but it’s not unusual for things to warm up to the high-70s or low-80s in some parts of the country. In Cape Town, the weather is slightly cooler because of its location on the coast. The daily average is around 65°F with around 20mm (less than an inch) of rainfall spread over the month. In areas like Johannesburg, the weather is much wetter with an average monthly rainfall of 120mm (4.7 inches). Overall, you can expect warm, pleasant weather with a massive 12 hours of sunshine per day!

Days continue to get longer and warmer as the month progresses, making November a fantastic time to travel to South Africa on holiday. The climate is warm with plenty of sunshine lasting all month. It’s not as hot as the peak of summer, which is great if you want to enjoy some outdoor activities such as sightseeing and wildlife spotting.

For our program, due to restrictions on internal flights within South Africa, the limit is 1 suitcase per person that is a soft duffel bag that does not exceed 20 kilograms (approx. 44 pounds). In addition, we recommend a day pack/back pack for day-to-day and as a carry-on instead of a purse. There are inexpensive laundry facilities available at each lodge. Suitcases and bags should be able to withstand plenty of handling. We recommend bringing a soft duffel bag with wheels.

The secret for successful packing on safari is MULTIPLE LIGHT LAYERS. Bring clothes that are cool, light and comfortable because summer temperatures can get hot in some areas. Also bring an umbrella or raincoat during summer, as this is when most of the country gets its rain; don’t forget a swimming suit!

The most practical items to pack are:

  • Hat, sunglasses and sunblock, as the sun will be strong.
  • Mosquito repellent.
  • Comfortable walking shoes, such as closed-toe Merrells.
  • For game viewing, a couple of neutral-toned items will be useful (Khaki, brown, white and beige colors).
  • For the evening, if you are dining at an upmarket restaurant or seeing a show, smart-casual attire is recommended.- Khaki, brown, white and beige c
  • Light cotton tops and cotton trousers/shorts
  • Bathing suit
  • Binoculars for game viewing
  • Plenty of photography equipment!

Yes, a valid passport is required to enter South Africa. Passports must have 2 unused pages for endorsements abroad, and they must also be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. If you do not have one or need a new one, contact the State Department Passport Office in your area immediately or visit their website.

We recommend that you also make copies of your passport, driver’s license, photo identification card and/or birth certificate in case of loss, and carry them with you on your trip separate from your passport.

U.S. and Canadian citizens are NOT required to obtain a visa to visit South Africa.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends updating all routine booster shots for travel almost anywhere. In addition, we suggest that you have a physical check-up before your trip, and discuss the type of trip in which you are participating with your physician.

Also, anti-malarial medication is recommended for while we’re in Kruger National Park (the main tourist areas are malaria-free, so you need not worry). Consult your doctor or a specialist travel clinic for the latest advice concerning malaria prophylaxis, as it changes regularly. Whether you take oral prophylaxis or not, always use mosquito repellent.

The only other health concern is the hot, strong African sun. You should not underestimate the effects of the sun; it is quite common for visitors to lose a day of holiday to sunstroke through overindulgence. Plenty of sun cream, a good sun hat and gradual adjustment are recommended.

Yes.  Our visit to Kruger National Park requires that you prepare to protect yourself. Follow the link to the CDC to learn more about Malaria protection and how to arm yourself when traveling to Africa.

Standards of hygiene in relation to food health and safety in South Africa, are generally high in hotels, restaurants, pubs and nightspots. Tap water in South Africa is safe to drink and cook with when taken from taps in urban areas. Not all tap water in rural areas is safe for consumption, so take precautions if necessary.

It is safe to eat fresh fruit, vegetables and salads, and put ice in your drinks. South Africa’s fish, meat and chicken are of excellent quality, so there is no need to limit yourself when enjoying the local cuisine.

Restaurants are subject to South Africa’s food safety control legislation, which is implemented by local government.  Regulations include certification and regular inspections by health inspectors to ensure hygienic standards are maintained.

Street food is not as common in South Africa as it is in other countries, although vendors selling traditional snacks and meals can be found in city centres and townships. Food safety in such instances cannot always be guaranteed.

High-quality tap (faucet) water is available almost everywhere in South Africa, treated so as to be free of harmful micro-organisms, and in any area other than informal or shack settlements, is both palatable and safe to drink straight from the tap. In some areas, the water is mineral-rich, and you may experience a bit of gastric distress for a day or two until you get used to it. Bottled mineral water, both sparkling and still, is readily available in most places.

The electricity supply in South Africa and Zambia is 220/230 volts AC, 50 HZ. Plugs are 3 point square. If you are planning to bring a video camera charger or any other electrical device, please bring voltage and plug adaptors where appropriate. Major hotels usually provide hair dryers, irons and other electrical amenities upon request. Click here to view the plug adaptor.

Banking

Banks are found in most towns, and are generally open from 09h00 to 15h30 on weekdays and 08h30 to 11h00 on Saturdays (Closed Sundays and Public Holidays). Most of them offer foreign exchange services – with cash, bank & credit cards as well as travellers cheques. You can also obtain cash from automatic teller machines (ATMs). Several international banks have branches in the main city centres. Always advise your bank that you are traveling outside of the country as they might block your purchases if they are not informed.

Additionally, the United States has laws prohibiting the import of certain items, which include many of the same things. You face having your purchase confiscated and/or heavy fines for exporting or importing prohibited items.

What Our Members Are Saying

I just came back from a fantastic Mediterranean vacation aboard the Norwegian Epic. STI was fantastic from the office staff to our cruise hostesses June and Georgia. I look forward to traveling with STI again in the future!

The Epic Med cruise was fantastic. It was my first trip to Europe and was a nice taste of Spain, Italy and France. The day I saw there was a cruise without a single supplement was when I signed up. Nice group and made lots of new friends. Thanks STI!
