Day 1- Thursday, April 23, 2020 (D)

Arrive in London, at any time and transfer to hotel on own. For those who arrive early, please hold your items at the front desk as check in is not until 3 p.m. Begin getting familiar with the area around our hotel, but make sure to be back at the hotel for our Welcome Dinner with the group!

Overnight at Holiday Inn London Kensington High Street.

Day 2- Friday, April 24, 2020 (B)

This morning after breakfast, we will depart London and travel west. Our first stop is Stonehenge in the Wiltshire countryside! The Neolithic stone circle is one of the most famous wonders of the world. Dating back to approximately 3000 BC, the circle of huge upright and horizontal rectangular stones continues to fascinate academics, spiritualists and visitors. Stonehenge could have been an elite burial mound, druid temple or ancient observatory and may have been put there by ordinary people, aliens or by Merlin the mythical wizard. Tour with audio guides or visit the modern visitor center, which includes over 250 artifacts, reconstructions of Neolithic houses, and a 360-degree audio-visual presentation that all help towards understanding the structure.

After we have marveled at Stonehenge, we will head to Salisbury. Medieval Salisbury Cathedral sits serenely within eight acres of manicured lawns in the Wiltshire countryside and has a very important place in the history of Britain’s architecture, religion and politics. The Gothic cathedral boasts Britain’s tallest spire, (123 metres / 404 ft), and largest close, quire and cloisters plus the world’s oldest working mechanical clock. Within the restored Chapter House lies one of only four copies in existence of the Magna Carta.

After our exciting day of tours and learning some of Britain’s history, we will transfer to our hotel to check in and the night is ours to explore the area.

Overnight at Mercure Bristol Grand Hotel.

Day 3- Saturday, April 25, 2020 (B)

Today, after breakfast at our hotel, we will travel to Bath and enjoy a walking tour. The delightful city center is packed with must-see sites and activity. The half-moon shaped Royal Crescent is the epitome of Bath’s Georgian architecture built from the attractive honey-coloured stone that dominates the city. Standing out on the city skyline are the towers of Bath Abbey. This historic building was founded in the 7th century, has been transformed and renovated over the centuries and now boasts an impressive gothic interior. Adjacent is the even older Roman Baths, one of Europe’s most well-preserved ruins from the Roman period. Wander the vast leisure complex, as the Romans did over 2000 years ago. Built in AD70, over hot springs, the Great Bath still receives over one million liters of hot water daily from the old Kings Spring below. There is an interactive museum, with costumed characters and audio guides available to bring the history around us to life. The striking Pulteney Bridge has covered shopping and arcades and connects the Georgian center to the east bank with leafy parks and the prestigious rugby club and university. We will also have the opportunity to taste the spa water, for the more adventurous or some free time to relax in a nearby café or grand restaurant in the pump house.

This afternoon, enjoy a visit to Somerset Cider Brandy Company, a farm that sits among 180 acres of cider apple orchards at the base of Burrow Hill. The farm has been pressing award-winning cider for over 200 years and in 1989 they were granted the UK’s first ever full cider-distilling license.

After our adventurous day, we will return to our hotel for a night at our leisure.

Overnight at Mercure Bristol Grand Hotel.

Day 4- Sunday, April 26, 2020 (B)

This morning we will embark on a drive to Wales, along the scenic Wye Valley and stop at Tintern Abbey. After we snap a few photos we will continue our journey to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, for a fascinating city tour. We will stop for photos, at Anne Hathaways cottage, before we head to the 16th-century, half-timbered house where Shakespeare was born. He grew up in the same house and lived there with Anne Hathaway and his children for a time. Today, it is a literary shrine to million of visitors a year and provides a glimpse into his life through artifacts and exhibits. Tour with an audio guide, visit the shop, gardens and café. From his birthplace, venture to his old schoolhouse and retirement home, for a full perspective of his life. Get a picture of the modern face of Shakespeare at the cutting edge RSC Theatre and Shakespeare’s New Place where the new generation continues his legacy. Wander along the pleasant cobbled streets, traditional taverns and half gabled black and white houses to gain a lasting impression of Elizabethan England.

This evening brings us to our hotel for check in and a night at our leisure.

Overnight at Doubletree by Hilton Coventry.

Day 5- Monday, April 27, 2020 (B)

Today after breakfast we will head out to visit Hidcote Manor Garden and stop for photos along the way. Hidcote Manor Garden is a garden in the United Kingdom, located at the village of Hidcote Bartrim, near Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. It is one of the best-known and most influential Arts and Crafts gardens in Britain, with its linked “rooms” of hedges, rare trees, shrubs and herbaceous borders. Created by Lawrence Johnston, it is owned by the National Trust and is open to the public.

When we return to our hotel, we will have the rest of the evening/night to spend at our leisure.

Overnight at Doubletree by Hilton Coventry.

Day 6- Tuesday, April 28, 2020 (B)

After breakfast this morning, we will drive to Woodstock and visit Blenheim Palace. The stunning Baroque masterpiece is still home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family but is best known as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. This UNESCO World Heritage Site will engage us from the outside as well as the inside. Take a tour of the guilded palace interiors, discover priceless collections and explore the Winston Churchill connection in a special exhibition. Step out into 2000 acres and wander the parklands and magnificent formal gardens, water terraces, and the huge man-made lake and mound. Movie buffs may recognize the palace from films such as 007’s SPECTRE, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, The Young Victoria and even Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

This afternoon, we will visit Oxford for a walking tour, home to one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious Schools; Oxford University. The importance and wealth of the university is projected through the scale and grandeur of the college buildings throughout the city. Pass some of the oldest colleges such as the 13th Exeter College, the impressive Bodleian Library and Baliol College, which is something of an assembly line for British Prime Ministers. Other Oxford highlights include the pretty Bridge of Sighs which connects two parts of Herford College, the Eagle and Child Pub where famous authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis would regularly meet and the sights and smells of the 18th century Oxford Covered Market. Oxford was also the perfect setting for the Harry Potter film series – a real Hogwartsian inspiration.

After our tour, we will continue back to London and check in to our hotel.

Overnight at Holiday Inn London Kensington High Street.

Day 7- Wednesday, April 29, 2020 (B, D)

This morning, after breakfast, embark on a London sightseeing tour of landmarks like Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. On the banks of the River Thames, in the heart of London, stands the Tower of London and nearly 1,000 years of history and intrigue. The Tower of London has been used at various times as a palace, barracks, military stronghold, zoo and most famously as a prison incarcerating famous names like Sir Walter Raleigh, Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes. During a visit to the Tower, we will see crown jewels worth over œ20 billion, meet the ravens who legends say have the fate of the Kingdom in their claws, talk to the distinctive Yoeman guards with their white ruffs, and learn about the gruesome torture that went on within the walls. The Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the only intact medieval buildings on the list.

After our fascinating city tour, the afternoon allows us free time to explore on our own or with new friends before our farewell dinner, this evening.

Join King Henry VIII at his royal banquet and be part of 1,000 years’ history at London’s extraordinary dinner-theatre experience. Go back in time to the days of kings, queens, knights, acrobats and jesters at this fascinating venue.  We will join a Medieval Banquet as a royal guest where we will shout for your wench, Wassail with knights and bang the table in appreciation. Enjoy live music as balladeers play and sing ancient song and admire the grace of beautiful acrobats and the energy of our jesters. Our banquet dinner includes two hours of live entertainment, a four course meal, free Ale and red wine during the show, and disco till late.

After a delicious meal and lively show, we will transfer back to our hotel.

Overnight at Holiday Inn London Kensington High Street.

Day 8- Thursday, April 30, 2020 (B)

After breakfast, we will transfer to the airport for flights home.

Members and friends that “show up” will not be allowed to participate.

Europe is still an elegant place when it comes to attire. Mixing in with the locals is much easier to do when dressed smartly and respectfully. For touring during the day, dress casual and wear comfortable shoes. Scarves are always fashionable and are a lightweight way to completely change your look!

The tours may last anywhere in length from 1 to 3 hours of intermittent walking and standing. Although these tours aren’t strenuous, a certain amount of stamina and health are required in order to be able to walk slowly and stand for extended periods of time. At any time, you can opt out of an excursion! After all, this is your vacation. Keep in mind that part of the charm of Europe, in general, is the terrain—towns are literally perched upon the sides of hills—therefore, in most locations, there will be uneven surfaces and hills to ascend and descend.

Packing Tips: Take only what you need; don’t over pack. Save room for souvenirs and purchases. Pack flat and full to avoid wrinkling. Bring wardrobe basics; mix and match 1-3 colors. Don’t pack anything valuable, fragile or perishable. Label your luggage with an outside tag, and place an identification card inside each suitcase. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. Our tour is moderately active with a lot of walking.

Essential Items: We highly recommend that you bring the following items.

– A smile and an open minded attitude
– Notepad, reading material and a travel journal to write all about your experience.
– Bathing suit, we have our own indoor pool!

– Water Resistant Jacket with light lining and/or collapsible umbrella, just in case

The currency used in England is the Pound Sterling.

Exchange Rates: The exchange rate fluctuates often. You may find the current exchange rates in the financial sections of newspapers and on the Internet. You may also find a number of websites by typing “foreign exchange rates” in your search engine. Two specific websites are: xe.com and money.cnn.com/markets/currencies.

Currency Exchange: Many locations will accept major credit cards, but for incidentals and small vendors you will need some local currency. ATM machines will dispense local currency for internationally accepted ATM cards and/or credit cards. They are usually conveniently located in large cities, but are limited in smaller towns and rural areas.

You may exchange cash and traveler’s checks for local currencies at hotels, banks and exchange bureaus. Banks offer the best rates, but beware, hours are limited in Europe. They are generally open from 9 a.m.-12 noon and 2-5 p.m.

You may purchase Euros from your local bank in advance or get a small amount on arrival at the airport. There is always an exchange at airports.

We recommend that you bring a combination of $3-500 USD depending on your spending habits for meals and shopping, as well as a debit card for withdrawals and a major credit card, preferably VI or MC.

Credit Cards: Your credit card will be accepted to settle your incidentals bill at all hotels and in major shops and restaurants.

No inoculations are required for travel to Europe. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends updating all routine booster shots for travel almost anywhere. In addition, we suggest that you have a physical check-up before your trip, and discuss the type of trip in which you are participating with your physician.

You and your physician may access much more, very detailed health information for travelers (including tips on staying healthy while traveling) on the CDC website, cdc.gov. Click their “Traveler’s Health” link or call toll-free 24-hours at 1-800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).

Travel Insurance is available through Travel Guard and in addition to direct access immediately upon completing your purchase, you will receive a quote from Travel Guard regarding travel insurance after reserving your vacation.  If you have any questions, Travel Guard professional, expert agents are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.   Call us, if you have not received your quote within 3 days.

Your “Final Vacation Details & Meetup Information” including transportation and how to meet up with the group will be available on the YOUR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS button on the left navigation bar on the trip site, 21 days prior to trip start date.  We suggest you leave a copy of this with your family.

For easy, less expensive communication in Europe, you may be able to use your own phone plan, generally .99-1.99 per minute (check before departure).

Internet access is available almost everywhere, including our hotels, but access is not always free. We recommend that you contact your provider before you depart to add an international roaming, text and data package. Most may be disabled once you return home.

Our office is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. In an emergency after hours, please contact Tammy Weiler at 815-715-6998.

All countries you will visit have laws against the purchase and export of certain items, including antiquities, national cultural property and certain animal products, especially endangered species (ivory, rhino horn, tortoise shell, coral, feathers, etc.). Additionally, the United States has laws prohibiting the import of certain items, which include many of the same things. You face having your purchase confiscated and/or heavy fines for exporting or importing prohibited items.

On return to the U.S., your baggage is subject to search by U.S. Customs. Currently, you are permitted to bring back $800 of goods duty free. Persons aged 21 or over may also bring in one liter of liquor and one carton of cigarettes. If you plan to purchase a lot of souvenirs or expensive items, it is important to retain all purchase receipts. However, please note that U.S. Customs may not accept a receipt as true cost if it seems unusually low for the estimated value of the item. You may access the regulations and restrictions governing US Customs on their official website, click here to learn more.

The Epic Med cruise was fantastic. It was my first trip to Europe and was a nice taste of Spain, Italy and France. The day I saw there was a cruise without a single supplement was when I signed up. Nice group and made lots of new friends. Thanks STI!
