Day 1 – Sunday, December 1

Arrival in Chiang Mai

Upon arrival at Chiang Mai Airport, we will be met by a local representative and transferred to Rachamankha Hotel for check in. This evening, we will enjoy a drink during our Meet & Greet, at the hotel. The rest of the night is ours to explore Chiang Mai and grab some dinner with new friends!

Chiang Mai is situated, on the Mae Ping River basin, some 310 metres above sea level and is known as the economic, cultural and tourism center of Northern Thailand. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, the terrain is mainly jungles and mountains, parts of which are within national parks still fertile and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are plenty of sites and landmarks to visit to learn about the unique indigenous culture, and lifestyle, of the tribal people who live up in the high hills. Some of the most popular sites include: Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, famous temples,  and Doi Pui National Park, home to Bhubing Palace.

Day 2 – Monday, December 2 (B, L)

City Tour, Doi Suthep Temple and Optional Night Market

After breakfast at the hotel, we will embark on our trishaw tour, pedaled by a strong driver, around the old city area of Chiang Mai. We will pass markets, and locals, lining the busy central road. The moat, bounding the historic center, is still intact although the walls were largely destroyed during World War II. Admire the charm of the unique architecture, especially at the old temples, as Chiang Mai is the focal point for the construction of temples and monasteries. We will visit Wat Pra Singh, or Monastery of the Lion Lord, founded in the 14th century, to house the ashes of King Kham Fu and to serve as the principal religious center of the Lanna Kingdom. The complex is composed of several buildings, of varying architectural and artistic merit, that form the most famous temple in Chiang Mai. The Viharn Lai Kham gilded hall, decorated with murals of everyday life, houses the revered Phra Buddha Sihing image. We will also have the opportunity to attend the Monk Blessing Ceremony where the monks will chant their mantras and sprinkle holy water to bring good luck to the guests. Be sure to present offerings to them in return! It is considered fortuitous to begin the day with a Monks’ Blessing Ceremony to ensure business success and spiritual happiness. There will also be spare time for a discussion with one of the Buddhist monks.

After lunch, at a local restaurant, we will continue to the 600 year-old Wat Pra That Doi Suthep, one of the many beautiful and historic Buddhist temples. After a drive up the mountain’s winding road, we will climb the 306 steps of the magnificent Naga (dragon-headed serpent) staircase. Inside is an intriguing copper-plated chedi, topped by a five-tier gold umbrella, which contains partial relics of Lord Buddha. Bring a camera to snap photos of the panoramic views over Chiang Mai.

After the tour, the rest of the evening is ours to spend how we choose. Try a local restaurant, for dinner, or join a group and discover the infamous night market. Here, our guide can assist us with bartering, or searching for particular items, should we need any help.

Day 3 – Tuesday, December 3 (B, L)
Elephant Nature Park

After breakfast, we will be picked up for our, picturesque, 1-hr. drive to Elephant Nature Park, in the mountainous Mae Rim district, outside Chiang Mai. Upon arrival, we will be greeted by rescued animals such as dogs, cats and buffalo. Observe the beautiful, free roaming (no riding), elephants and enjoy the natural surroundings of the sanctuary. Witness how they became a proud herd, free from abuse, for the first time in their lives. Over the next several hours we will hear the personal stories, of our rescued elephants, told by one of our expert guides. Admire the incredible giants, from the viewing platforms, as they roam the park with their family groups. We will also be able to walk around the park with an expert guide, in smaller groups, and meet some of the friendly elephants. Enjoy this moment, up close, with these majestic animals and be prepared for great photo opportunities. One of the highlights is feeding time, when the volunteers and mahouts (elephant handlers/caretakers) prepare fresh fruit and vegetables for the elephants.

After the elephants have had their snacks, and we have had our first guided walk through the park, it’s time for us to eat too. Enjoy the delicious buffet of all vegetarian, Thai, cuisine on the viewing platform, as we continue to watch the elephants walking around the Park. Chat with our guide, and park volunteers, to learn even more about these magnificent animals.

We will also have a chance to view “Vanishing Giants”, the award-winning, National Geographic documentary, which profiles the work of Khun Lek, founder of Elephant Nature Park. We will learn of the problems elephants face in Southeast Asia, as well as the changes, advocated by Elephant Nature Foundation, regarding the treatment, care, and training of domestic and wild elephants.  Walk with the staff, and the elephants, to Taeng river, which skirts the park. Sit back and watch the gentle giants as they splash around, and play, while we stay dry on the observation platform, close to the river. It is a unique photo opportunity to see the elephants enjoying their quality bathing time.

Important: Park visits are all about spending quality time observing and being around the herd. Elephant Nature Park does not follow a strict schedule and visitor’s interaction with the elephants is kept to a minimum. The best way to make the most of our visit is to relax, watch and learn from the elephants.  Our visit helps support their regional projects and offers an invaluable opportunity of helping elephant conservation. All proceeds, from gift shop sales, go directly to helping the elephants and the mahouts who care for them.

What to bring: Hat, Sunscreen/bug repellent, Change of clothing, or rain gear (just in case you get muddy or wet), comfortable footwear and camera.

After our day with the elephants, it’s time to say goodbye and return to Chiang Mai city, where we will be dropped off at our hotel. The rest of the night is at our leisure.

Day 4 – Wednesday, December 4 (B, L)
Cooking Class at Pantawan Cooking School

After breakfast, we will head off to the Patawan Cooking School. The unique Thai cooking school is located just 10 minutes from Chiang Mai city. It is a classic, teak wood house with luxury cooking stations, nicely set up, with space for each person. We will experience a traditional ambiance, while cooking and having a meal, in this beautiful, Thai style, old house. The program starts with a tour, at the local fresh market, where the chef will teach us the techniques of how to choose the perfect ingredients. Check out the garden, as well, and choose some herbs to use in our Thai cooking. Before we begin, at our own station. the chef will demonstrate how to cook each meal. Once we have finished we can enjoy our lunch, on the balcony, overlooking the beautiful gardens.

The rest of our last day, in Chiang Mai. allows us the opportunity for some free time to spend how we please.

Day 5 – Thursday, December 5 (B, D)
Chiang Mai – Bangkok

After breakfast, we will check out of the hotel, and transfer to the Chiang Mai airport, for our flights to Bangkok. Book your flight with an STI representative in order to arrive with the group.

Upon arrival, transfer to the Riva Surya Hotel for check-in. The day is ours, to begin exploring Bangkok, until our group dinner at the hotel this evening.

Well known as the City of Angels, Krungthepmahanakorn (Bangkok) is a vibrant, capital city. In addition to the many temples and historic buildings, such as The Grand Palace and Wat Arun, the list of interesting places to visit is endless. There are numerous canal (klong) networks, like the Chaophraya River, giving it the name of “Venice of the East”. Bangkok takes pride in their entertainment options, as well as their excellent dining, from international style restaurants to roadside stalls open almost 24 hours a day. Bangkok is also home to many excellent Spa facilities, both in large hotels and privately run.

Day 6 – Friday, December 6 (B, L)
Grand Palace, Wat Po, China Town and Thonburi Klong

After breakfast this morning, we will make our way to the Grand Palace, a “must see” attraction in Bangkok. The palace served as the official residence of the past Kings of Thailand from the 18th to the mid-20th century. It is an architectural wonder of golden stupas, walls and pillars encrusted in shining and colourful mosaics. The architecture is predominantly Thai, though there are some European influences. We will see buildings once used for different occasions; the Reception Hall, the Coronation Hall, the Throne Hall, the Royal Guest House and, the most famous building within the palace grounds, Wat Phra Kaew. Wat Phra Kaew is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. Continue to Wat Po, with its massive reclining Buddha, before we break for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, we will continue on to visit China Town and the Klongs (canals) of Thonburi. We start our visit to Thailand’s largest Chinese community. Enjoy a short walk in one of the most densely populated, ethnic neighborhoods in Bangkok and be captivated by the diversity. Continue, by long boat on the on the picturesque Chao Phraya River, visit the canals of Thonburi and stop to visit the majestic Temple of Dawn, “Wat Arun”.

Once we return to the hotel, the rest of the day is at our leisure.

Day 7 – Saturday, December 7 (B, D)
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Thai Dinner with Classical Dancing

After breakfast today, we will head to one of Thailand’s most famous floating markets; Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Situated 110 km, from Bangkok, in Ratchaburi province, this market is like a trip back in time to the Siam of old. We will see colourfully clad merchants paddle, along congested canals, in sturdy canoes laden with fresh fruit, vegetables and other foodstuff to sell to shoppers on the canal banks. There is a lot of activity and bargaining is part of the fun of the sale. This buzzing market is at its best, in the early morning, before the crowds arrive and the heat of the day builds up. After visiting the market, we continue on to Phra Pathom Chedi, in Nakorn Pathom, reportedly the largest pagoda in South East Asia. The golden-tiled dome of the Chedi towers is almost 116-metres into the air.

This evening, enjoy a luxury excursion to the, award-winning, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, internationally renowned as one of the world’s greatest hotels. With a history dating back to 1879, it is also the destination of choice for celebrities, world leaders and authors like Joseph Conrad, Noel Coward, John le Carre and Graham Greene. Some of the guest rooms are even named after leading writers! For our traditional dinner experience, we will sit on pillows, at low tables, in the glittering, bronze-trimmed, teak and marble main hall, and dine on finely crafted Thai cuisine. The delicious food is complemented by classical music and traditional dancing from different periods in Thai history. This is a truly spectacular way to bring our Thailand adventure to a close.

Temperatures in Thailand will be around high 70s to high 80s (degrees Fahrenheit). Perfect weather for an adventure!

Currently, most airlines will allow you to check 1 bag, weighing 50 pounds each, for a fee. However, our internal flight in Thailand has a max weight limit of 15kg (33lbs). Our program is very laid back and you will be in beach wear most of the time with a pair of shorts, T-shirt or sarong.

Laundry facilities are offered by some of our hotels for a charge. There will be times when you may want to or have to do your own laundry so we suggest you bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap.

Members are responsible for any excess luggage charges.

Bring along summer clothing all the way!  The fashion of the day is the sarong and you will finds 100s from which to choose in colorful designs in every shop. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.

In Asia the dress standard is more conservative than it is back home. When packing try to pick loose, lightweight, long clothing that will keep you cool in the usually hot and humid climate of Asian summers. In predominately Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim countries we ask that you dress respectfully and avoid very short shorts/skirts and singlets/tanktops when visiting temples or mosques or other holy sites. In Thailand, topless or nude sunbathing is not allowed or appropriate and in some Muslim villages passengers should swim using a sarong or a long t shirt to cover up their swimsuit.

Your best smile! Thailand is also known as the land of smiles.

The currency used in Thailand is the Thai Baht.

A combination of ATM card (s) and some cash is the ideal mix.

As currency exchange rates do fluctuate, we ask that you refer to the following website for the most up to date daily exchange rates: www.xe.com for each currency.

ATM Machines: The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. Please note, your bank will charge a fee for overseas withdrawals.

USD Cash is recommended for times when ATMs are not accessible. You should bring some cash with you for emergency situations (approximately $250) but carrying only cash is a high safety risk. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Travellers cheques may be tricky, timely and expensive to exchange. While we do not recommend that you bring them as your primary source of funds, it is great to have one or two cheques in case of emergency. Thomas Cook or American Express travelers’ cheques in US currency are the easiest to exchange.

Cash advances may also be made with some banks but are time consuming and tend to have high fees attached.

Credit Cards: Credit cards may be used at some upmarket restaurants and at some larger stores if shopping for big items. Your credit card will likely be accepted to settle your incidentals bill at hotels as well.  MasterCard and Visa are most widely accepted. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up.

Travel Insurance is mandatory for this trip and available through Travel Guard and in addition to direct access immediately upon completing your purchase, you will receive a quote from Travel Guard regarding travel insurance after reserving your vacation. All countries you will visit have laws against the purchase and export of certain items, including antiquities, national cultural property and certain animal products, especially endangered species (ivory, rhino horn, tortoise shell, coral, feathers, etc.). Additionally, the United States has laws prohibiting the import of certain items, which include many of the same things. You face having your purchase confiscated and/or heavy fines for exporting or importing prohibited items.

On return to the U.S., your baggage is subject to search by U.S. Customs. Currently, you are permitted to bring back $800 of goods duty free. Persons aged 21 or over may also bring in one liter of liquor and one carton of cigarettes. If you plan to purchase a lot of souvenirs or expensive items, it is important to retain all purchase receipts. However, please note that U.S. Customs may not accept a receipt as true cost if it seems unusually low for the estimated value of the item. You may access the regulations and restrictions governing US Customs on their official website, click here to learn more.

What Our Members Are Saying

WOW!! Where do I start? I would have to say this is the best vacation I have ever had!! I don't think I ever laughed, ate, drank, and danced so much. I am so glad to have found this site and met so many wonderful people and made great memories that will last forever. I would recommend using STI for a singles cruise or any trip. Thank you and everyone from the trip!

What a FABULOUS bunch of people. Sometimes we meet up with friends we've made during our previous travels which makes it even more special and always making new friends! There are always exciting excursions and fun things planned for the group and a great Concierge Team! Ever so grateful I found STI.
