Day 3 – Wednesday (January 1)

Travel to Coca and Board the Anakonda (B, L, D)

Our adventure begins in the city of Quito, Capital of Ecuador. After taking a short 30- minute flight from Quito to the Amazon city of Coca, located in the Province of San Francisco de Orellana, we will transfer to the dock and board our motorized canoe to begin our journey down the river for approximately an hour and a half, taking in the first sights and sounds of the Amazon. Soon, we will reach the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises and receive our welcome aboard.

Once we have settled into the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises, we will be joined by expert local naturalist guides who will provide us with a brief and informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon, after which guests will have their first opportunity to discover the exciting features of our cruise ship: spacious social areas, comfortable suites, and the observation deck that allows us to admire the changing rainforest landscape as we glide down the Napo River.

After dinner, we will plunge straight into the Amazon by going for a nighttime forest walk to observe the forest’s nocturnal activity and experience the thrill of the vivid noises and aromas that come from so much biodiversity.

Day 4 – Thursday (January 2)

The Heart of the Yasuni National Park (B, L, D)

Early in the morning, we will visit Yasuni National Park. This is a pristine and relatively undisturbed region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our guests will be pleased to learn that this is the home of the legendary Pink River Dolphin! In this area we can also find anacondas, river turtles and various primate species, as well as the colorful Hoatzin, a unique bird that is known locally as the “Stinky Turkey”.

Later in the afternoon, we will go canoeing in a blackwater lake, home to giant otters and the magnificent, albeit elusive manatee. We will also enjoy a pleasant hike in the Riparian/Gallery Forest, where we have the chance to spot a flock of birds and marvel at the intricate organization of a colony of leaf-cutter ants by the “Giant Fig Tree”, a truly majestic tree that is home to an abundance of wildlife, much like the “Giant Kapok Tree”.

Day 5 – Friday (January 3)

Quechua Family & Canoeing in a Blackwater Lake (B, L, D)

We will start the day off by visiting an authentic Quechua family located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will receive cultural immersion and the opportunity to learn directly from members of the local community.

We will then board the Manatee Amazon Explorer for lunch and some leisure time as we continue our navigation upstream. At this time, our guests will be delighted with our life onboard experiences and participate in a cooking class with our expert chef who will share recipes and techniques using fresh and organic ingredients to prepare exquisite traditional Ecuadorian food that you can replicate at home. Guests are also invited to try their hands at making traditional handicrafts or enjoy our onboard facilities such as: a relaxing massage at the Rainforest Spa, a spectacular ever-changing scenery view from our Amazon Hut Tub, a delicious cocktail at our Bar and Lounge or just admire the amazing sunset or the stargazing at night from our Observation Deck Lounge. For our more active guest a kayaking activity is the best choice to explore the nature around. There is an option for everyone!

Day 6 – Saturday (January 4)

Forest Adventure & Observation Canopy Tower (B, L, D)

Our guests can relax and enjoy the Anakonda Amazon Cruises during the morning and disembark to explore the nearby forest for a walk to discover a myriad of different animals and plant species that can only be found in the Amazon basin.

In the afternoon, we will visit a canopy tower, built against a giant Kapok tree. The perspective at the top of this observation tower is truly glorious, looming above the lush treetops and providing a view of the sheer vastness of the Amazon Basin.

In the evening, we will bravely venture into the river on a canoe to search for black caimans with the help of our flashlights.

Day 7 – Wednesday (January 5)

Departure (B)

Enjoy the last part of our return journey onboard and then disembark the Anakonda Amazon Cruises to take the motorized canoe back to Coca (one-and-a-half-hour ride).  From Coca we will take our flight back to Quito (UIO).  Guests with an afternoon or evening departure can relax at the Airport, or choose an optional Add-On Spa Day at the Hosteria San Jose.

Unfortunately, our adventure comes to an end, but leaving us with wonderful photos and memories. We look forward to having you and your friends with us soon on a Singles Travel International vacation! Have a safe journey back home!

FAQs

You’ll have the chance to visit remote ecosystems that few have had the opportunity to experience while enjoying the comforts, commodities and services of a 5-star boutique river hotel.  You’ll be traveling aboard the Anakonda, a leader in Environmentally Responsible and Sustainable tours in Ecuador.

Apart from highlighting the Amazon to the world, the Anakonda is working hard to promote environmental awareness not only for those who visit, but for our employees and the communities at large, our state-of-the-art vessel were purposely conceived to create the least impact possible on the environment.

The Anakonda is conscious that it operates in an extremely fragile and deeply controversial region and believes in sustainable tourism —giving visitors from other corners of the world the opportunity to experience natural heritage sites as fascinating as the Amazon Basin. This offers an excellent way for local communities to reap financial benefits while protecting and cherishing the land they call home.

Guests should be in good physical health in order to be able to make the most of their Amazon Cruise. Visiting the area involves the use of small motorized boats, and at times may possibly include some wet landings. The daily nature excursions may include walking on irregular terrain, and getting in and out of the boats occasionally requires a degree of physical effort. Walking excursions and hikes may last up to one hour. Malaria and yellow fever vaccinations are not required for travelers coming into the region, but they are recommended. Guests choosing to get vaccinations should do so at least 3 weeks prior to departure to ensure no illness during travel.

The Ecuadorian Amazon Basin is a special place, unlike most visitor sites in the world, filled with teeming nature and adventure at every turn. There is no telling what you will see or experience. The unexpected is certainly one of its treasures.
Of course, there are constants as well. The Amazon is located in the lowland equatorial tropics. This is a humid environment. Excursions on land usually take place in the mornings and afternoons, as the temperature rises at midday when we will usually be taking R&R aboard the Anakonda. Weather is relatively constant throughout the year (we’re on the Equator, so there are no strongly demarcated seasons). It can certainly be hotter in New York or Paris in summer than it ever is in Ecuador’s corner of the Amazon Basin.

This is a rainforest, so rain is a normal occurrence. That’s what makes it so lush and wonderful. Often, showers are short-lived and they actually serve to cool the air, which is always welcome and refreshing.

The insects here are marvelous, colorful, bizarre and unique, just like everything else is… Like most everywhere in the world, you’ll find mosquitoes, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised that for the most part they are manageable with a little repellent from time to time. Remember, this is a very intact ecosystem and birds and other animals take care of maintaining a balanced environment, unlike other more developed parts of the world.

Forest trails can be uneven (a walking stick is helpful if you do not feel that you are sturdy on your feet), and in certain segments, can be muddy or flooded. Good traction state-of-the-art mountain hiking boots might be helpful, but are not the best answer. Usually you are better off with rubber boots (which we provide onboard, as well as waterproof plastic ponchos). By the way, clothes should be lightweight and quick-dry (check out our packing list).

When we say that things are unexpected in the Amazon, we really mean it. You can’t really know just what you’ll come across. There is always something. The environment is, in general, so different from anything most people have witnessed, that living it for the first time can be a deep life-changing experience. Sound is unbelievable. When paddling along one of the winding black-water streams, we invite you to close your eyes and try to take in the plethora of fascinating sounds that fill the air. The sheer mass and diversity of trees, their amazing height, the ground (we also invite you to take a moment and just look under the leaves… it is here where an important part of the secret of what makes the Amazon such a rich and successful ecosystem lies), just enjoy it, let go, feel the spirits of the Amazon envelope you at every turn…

While in the Amazon, jeans are NOT recommended, and try avoiding bright colored or white wear, so as not to distract (or frighten) certain animals. The more camouflaged you dress the better!  Spring/summer clothing is best, with lightweight layers and a warm jacket or sweatshirt. Lightweight, long sleeves and pants will help minimize exposure to bugs and sun.

The currency in Ecuador and the Galapagos is the US Dollar, so no exchange is necessary.  We recommend you bring US dollars in small denominations, $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills that are not too old, worn or ripped for personal purchases, drinks beyond water/coffee/tea aboard the Anakonda, incidentals and tipping.  Please remember the tip for the local guide is not included in our package price. We recommend $20/day, per guide, per person.

**Packing Tips:** Take only what you need; don’t over pack. Save room for souvenirs and purchases. Pack flat and full to avoid wrinkling. Bring wardrobe basics; mix and match around one or two colors. Don’t pack anything valuable, fragile or perishable. Label your luggage with an outside tag, and place an identification card inside each suitcase.  This tour includes boat and bus rides.  If you suffer from motion sickness, Dramamine or a similar medication is recommended.

The food and water systems of Ecuador are well developed, but safety is recommended to ensure you have no problems during your trip.  Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.  Bring a reusable water bottle which can be filled at the filtered water stations in the hotel.

Your tour includes a meal package with carefully planned meals and restaurants.  The water and ice provided with your meals can be well trusted.  For meals outside the group itinerary, it is recommended to take care or avoid street vendors and small restaurants. Raw fruits and vegetables must be cleaned properly to ensure they are sterilized and not contaminated with untreated water.  Check with your hosts for recommendations on the best restaurants to visit.

What Our Members Are Saying

Although I always dreamed of visiting South America, I cannot say I had given Ecuador much thought. What an oversight; what a delightful surprise! When I saw this trip on Singles Travel International, the adventurous itinerary called my name. I expected it to be good, but Robert Bucheli and all the wonderful staff at Mountain Views Inn make this vacation great. This is the best possible balance between active learning, and being pampered and spoiled Weather is picture perfect here, near the capital of Ecuador. We rose early each morning to the most wonderful breakfasts with coffee, yogurt, fruit and cereals, eggs, toast or rolls of many delightful forms, and bacon. Then all aboard our class-a tour bus for a central adventure – equator, whitewater rafting, zip lining, and the mountain tops above Quito. Each of these central adventures is surrounded by non-stop discoveries on the way there and back again. Lunch is always on the road, including empanadas, sandwiches, tamales, chochos, tostadas with snacks, fruit and exotic teas. On the shorter days, when the destination is closer, gourmet dinner is at the gracious Inn. We got to discover awesome local restaurants for dinner on the longer trips, such as Mindo. Each night, when they poured our tired bodies into our cozy beds, sleep came easy!

The most life-changing part was not just the country itself which was unbelievable and beauty, but was our hosts Robert and Sarah. They were phenomenal. Robert was an unbelievable foodie, he is a mix of New Yorker and Ecuadorian and really loves his country and really knows good food and really knows the right places to eat. The group dynamics were unbelievable. The whole trip was really life changing for me, I met great people, I had fantastic experiences, and I saw fantastic beauty. I recommend this trip and probably any Singles Travel International trip to anyone who is single and wants to travel with great educated interesting people all over the world.
