I live for the weekends. Sure, an annual jaunt to Europe is always a thrill and having at least one cruise per year is a must. But the weekends are what keep me whole, give me a chance to try new things and hang out with friends and family without a big commitment of time or cash.
What I like most about taking off for the weekend is that I am able to plan fast and pack fast. With such a busy schedule, the last thing I need to do is spend hours on packing. So here are some tricks and tips.
While flying for Pan Am in the 80s, I was on call and had to be ready in 90 minutes for a trip anywhere in the world. Ever since then, I have always had a “minis” toiletry bag ready to go with my essentials. Yours could be anything from shampoo, shaving cream, contact solution, deodorant and toothpaste. For creams and lotions, most make-up counters offer samples when you buy and I stock up on lotions every time I stay in a hotel!
Next, check the weather the day before you leave. There is no need to pack any earlier and you will avoid bringing unnecessary items. Layers are the best bet for all circumstances.
On the subject of shoes, simple; one pair, on my feet. If I have to bring another pair for some reason, I wear the chunkier of the 2. Don’t forget to stuff items into packed shoes for additional space!
For clothes, I mix and match colors, so for a weekend I’d bring a pair of jeans or slacks and 1, wrinkle free dress (for guys, a dress shirt). Then add a couple T’s, underwear and socks. If it’s chilly, I’ll add a jacket or sweater and wear it.
A few accessories such as a belt, jewelry or scarves are fantastic for dressing it up or adding a little flair. Guys, even men look great in a scarf! A bathing suits doesn’t take up any room at all.
Obviously, if you’re driving, space is no issue. But when flying, who wants to waste time waiting at the baggage claim, when you could already be at your first site, party, meal? Savvy packing saves time not to mention hassle if your bag gets lost.
I always keep my valuables and keys in the same place in my bag so I don’t waste time looking for these items, especially when I get back home. And finally, there is rarely something I can’t live without or buy when I get there, so don’t sweat it. Just pack and go!
